Chikun
Gunya Starts Suddenly with Fever, chills, Vomiting, Headache, nausea, Joint
Pain and rash. In Swahili Language (an African Language) ‘ Chikun Gunya’ means
“that which beds up”. This refers to stop posture of patients who are afflicted
with severe joint pain. While recover from Chikun Gunya is the expected outcome
rarely joint pain may be prolonged up to a year or more. Infection appears to
confer lifelong immunity. The time between the bite of a mosquito and the
starts of symptoms ranges from 1-12 days.
Very
rarely the disease become fatal by producing complications like meningitis,
encephalitis etc. Chikun Gunya is diagnosed by blood examination. But when an
epidemic occurs with characteristics triad of fever, rash and join pains Chikun
Gunya can be suspected.
